We’re delighted to congratulate Fairfield Prep School for winning the #HeroesOfHomeLearning Award for Celebrating School life virtually.
Our judge Georgina Bruce, Art Teacher from Balcarras School loved this idea: ‘I really enjoyed the humorous news style explanation of the virtual sports day, including special guest star pundits! The message communicated a real sense of promoting togetherness. With the event being scheduled to bring students together to compete at the same time, I bet this was a really special event to be involved with which I’m sure students really enjoyed.’
We caught up with Adam Hoult, Head of Physical Education and Sports at Fairfield Prep to uncover a bit more about how they organised it and how it was received.
What challenges did you face with celebrating school life at the beginning of the lockdown?
Celebrating school life was initially challenging. As staff, we were finding our way, collaborating was the key and through this, we were able to come up with some ideas that gave the children a sense of connection and community during lockdown.
How did you hold your virtual sports day?
Our virtual sports day was run over one afternoon. Children could click on one of the 7 challenges and fill in their scores. The scores were automatically collated via a shared excel spreadsheet thanks to our amazing tech team.
The children recorded their scores for their houses. The headteacher then presented the award via a virtual assembly. The highlights included: Overall, the children completed 552km run, 7,129 step ups, 1,033 keep ups, 6h 34 min plank, 1,564 clap catches and 2,374 burpees!
What surprised us the most was the sheer number of children who took part. It highlighted to us the real importance of connecting with their peers, their housemates and feeling that sense of community, which they so desperately missed!
These are all the house spirit photos from the day! Huge thank you for the award and for providing a great platform for us to organise something for them!
